79-Year-Old Hoboken Woman Killed While Riding Bike Was Prominent Quilter

In March 2004, Margaret "Peggy" McGeary, a Hoboken woman who was working as a sign-maker, was on foot when she was hit by an SUV. Incredibly, the then-64-year-old suffered no broken bones and was able to leave the hospital that day (although she would spend several months in physical therapy).

McGeary's injuries did leave her unable to continue working as a sign maker, but did not prevent her from pursuing her passion, quilting and sewing, as a full-time career. She went on to open Mile Square Fabric Studio and became a prominent figure in the area's quilting community.

On Monday, McGeary was a victim in another traffic accident -- but this time, one that ended in tragedy. While riding her bicycle at Paterson Plank Road and Palisade Avenue near the Jersey City-Union City border, she was fatally struck by a truck making a right turn.

Authorities did not immediately release her name, but she was later identified in a published report.

Born in Pennsylvania, she had been a Hoboken resident since 1978. In her bio, she said she was a self-taught quilter who began practicing the craft 20 years ago. Her work went on to appear in numerous shows and exhibits over the years.

She was also a member of Hobart, a Hoboken arts collective she helped found; the Jersey City Quilt Guild and the Quilters of Color Network of New York, New York.

"My love of fabric has evolved into an art form that I hope can be enjoyed by others. My work is meant to be enjoyed by all who see it," she wrote.
